Tesla Model X Will Be The World’s Quickest SUV



The Tesla Models S just keeps getting better. With the Ludicrous high-performance mode option, announced late this past week, the Model S will go a step beyond the Insane mode currently offered.

As such, the electric sedan to launch from zero to 60 in just 2.8 seconds and blast through the quarter mile in just 10.9 seconds.    

And it won’t be the only Tesla Motors [NSDQ:TSLA] model with such performance potential.

According to CEO Elon Musk, Ludicrous will also be available to buyers of the the forthcoming Tesla Model X. Along with the upgraded 90-kWh battery, which could allow the gull-wing door SUV to spring to 60 mph in a little as 3.3 seconds.

Of course, testing hasn’t even started yet, so real-world performance is still an estimate. But for those keeping score, that’s a half second quicker than a Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, and within spitting distance of the Lamborghini Huracán LP 610-4’s reported zero to 62 time of 3.2 seconds. If Tesla is able to deliver on the 3.3 second figure that would make the Model X the quickest SUV in the world.

The Model X is scheduled to start reaching buyers early in 2016, but when Ludicrous examples will be available is anyone’s guess. Stay tuned.

HONG KONG / PARIS – The Paris Auto Show is fast approaching, and companies are jockeying for position in the eye of a media storm.

Infiniti presents Q80 Inspiration: Infiniti’s vision of category-breaking, supreme luxurious driving – a top-of-the-line, four-seat fastback that rises above the crowd. It’s an audacious and elegant step forward for Infiniti as a global player designed to shake up the status quo in the premium large four-door club – a no-compromise ambassador of driver-centric powertrain and onboard technologies.

At 15:30 local time on October 2 in Hall 5 of the Parc des Expositions de Versailles in Paris, Infiniti will introduce the progressive Q80 Inspiration to the media and provide a glimpse into its high-performance and efficient hybrid-electric powertrain implementation as well as additional technologies.

In profile, Infiniti Q80 Inspiration extends to 5052 millimeters (198.9 inches) with a long wheelbase of 3103 mm (122.2 in) framed by custom 22-inch five-dual-spoke lightweight alloys. It strikes an imposing stance with its width of 2027 mm (79.8 in) and height of 1350 mm (53.1 in).

The Q80 Inspiration’s expansive, edgy, sensual interpretation of the Infiniti brand really makes a statement. There are no side-door mirrors to break up the aesthetics of the unmistakable profile. The full roof length of the teardrop passenger greenhouse is accentuated by lightweight acoustic glass. And its doors open portal style, which allows the stunning cabin to be fully on display while driver and passengers step in and out with ease.
A concept as impactful as Q80 Inspiration is set to push boundaries in more ways than through the beauty of its attention-grabbing skin. The cabin is able to bring together the four occupants in a highly stylized and personalized ambiance of the highest quality. The reengineered powertrain, featuring Bentley’s mighty 6¾-litre twin-turbo V8, propels the Mulsanne Speed to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds (0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds) and on to a top speed of 190 mph (305 km/h). In modern Bentley tradition, the extra performance is matched by markedly improved efficiency; a 13% gain means a range extended by 50 miles (80 km).

New and contemporary styling features define the Mulsanne Speed as a statement in quintessential British luxury. On-board technology and connectivity are discreetly integrated beneath the finest materials, created with unrivalled craftsmanship and exquisite handcrafted details.

Torque pushed to record levels

At the heart of the Mulsanne Speed is Bentley’s iconic 6¾-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, which has been re-engineered for the Mulsanne Speed as well as the signature Mulsanne. A totally redesigned combustion system (including combustion chamber, inlet ports, fuel injectors, spark plugs, and compression ratio) promotes a much faster and more controlled combustion process. Through combining these advances with new variable valve timing and optimised turbocharger control, torque output of the engine has been pushed to record levels – 1,100 Nm (811 lb.ft) from 1,750 rpm.

The swell of torque from low engine speeds builds to a new peak power output of 537 PS, enough to drive the Mulsanne Speed to a top speed of 190 mph (305 km/h) – an unrivalled figure in the ultra-luxury sector. The 0-60 mph sprint is covered in 4.8 seconds, with 0-100 km/h taking just 4.9 seconds.

The new engine is paired with a recalibrated gearbox designed to enhance the driving experience of the Mulsanne Speed. The gear strategy is optimised for the new, higher wave of torque, and is designed for instant torque delivery on throttle application. The connection between the car and driver has been the focus, and extensive validation with both keen drivers and professional chauffeurs has proven the new setup. A new “S” mode gives the driver even more control, and maintains the engine speed above 2,000 rpm so that the turbochargers are always ready to deliver instantaneous performance.

An extensive recalibration of the engine management system has yielded benefits beyond increased torque and power. The cylinder deactivation system, that runs the engine as a V4 during light load, has been retuned for smoother transitions between V8 and V4 for even greater refinement. This work combines with a new gearbox control strategy and the engine hardware improvements to give a new level of efficiency for the Mulsanne engine.

Meeting the new EU6 emissions legislation, and designed to also meet the upcoming US LEV III standards in the future, the new powertrain records 342 g/km of CO 2 on the N EDC drive cycle – a 13% improvement on the current Mulsanne. The ensuing fuel economy improvements have extended the fuel range of the new Mulsanne Speed by 50 miles (80 km).

A Chassis System Tailored to the Driver

To deploy the effortless power and acceleration on offer in the Mulsanne Speed, an even more driver-focused Sport suspension mode is included. While the Bentley and Comfort suspension modes provide a comfort-focused and fully compliant chassis setup, the Sport mode stiffens the all-round air suspension for improved body control and adjusts the steering dynamics for greater feedback and accuracy. The driver can also choose to individually match steering, chassis and engine tunes according to personal preference through the Custom setting.

Through this new setup, the Mulsanne Speed builds on the abilities of the signature Mulsanne model, being able to switch from a communicative and enjoyable car to drive at pace, to a relaxing, comfortable and exceptionally refined limousine.

An assertive exterior

The Mulsanne Speed reflects its ground-breaking performance with new and more assertive styling features that are marks of distinction for Bentley’s pinnacle flagship.

A dark tint finish is applied to the exterior stainless steel matrix grilles, in a process unique in the automotive industry, with the radiator grille, lower bumper grilles and wing vents all featuring this exquisite treatment. The distinctive headlights of the Mulsanne show the same dark tint application , and at the rear of the car the taillights retain the “floating ellipse” design, but are similarly finished with a dark tint for a striking appearance, especially at night.

The Mulsanne Speed introduces Bentley’s first ever directional style wheel, with a design that is handed for the right or left side of the car. The 21″ wheels, available in painted, polished and dark tint with machined accent finishes, are individually machined from solid forged blanks, before being perfected by hand.

Twin rifled exhaust tailpipes are the finishing touch to the revised powertrain, while solid, polished stainless steel Speed badging adorns the front fender and door tread plate areas.

Four new exterior paint colours are introduced for the Mulsanne and Mulsanne Speed. These are:
• Spectre: Seemingly black at first glance, heavy gold metallic and a hint of green result in a rich tone inspired by reptilian skin.
• Candy Red: A rich and deep liquid red.
• Camel : Reminiscent of golden sands, Camel has a bright metallic highlight with a butterscotch mid – tone.
• Marlin: A rich blue with a hint of green, inspired by the shade of deep ocean waters and with a metallic shimmer.

The “standard” paint range covers 25 shades, including Marlin, while the optional extended range features over 100 colours. A fully bespoke paint-matching service is available on request.

A Cabin of Contemporary Luxury

The cabin of the Mulsanne Speed is a contemporary reinterpretation of the exquisite interior of the Bentley flagship. To create a modern two-tone feel, a new and unique colour split is available, with new stitch lines, that balances diamond quilted light-colour hide with darker, smooth hide. A new technical veneer option is available, with Piano Black veneer panels now including expertly handcrafted carbon fibre inlays. These new, contemporary panels have been especially developed for the Mulsanne Speed and match the rich, lustrous finish of the Piano Black veneer.

The Mulliner Driving Specification interior features are fitted as standard to the Mulsanne Speed, and includes:
• Diamond quilted hide door panels and seats
• Indented hide headlining
• Embroidered Bentley emblems to all seats
• A coined finish to interior door handles
• Knurling to the sports gear lever and “organ stop” ventilation controls
• Drilled alloy sports foot pedals

Customers choose from 24 different hide colours, in six different colour splits, and ten different veneers (seven as cost options) when specifying their Mulsanne Speed. Included in these ranges is a new hide colour, Camel (to match the new exterior paint of the same name) and a new veneer to the Mulsanne family, Tamo Ash.

Concealed Technology and Endless Customisation

Concealed beneath the exquisite materials that define the Mulsanne Speed cabin is a suite of technology to make any journey as productive or relaxing as one desires. A 60 GB on-board hard drive can store the driver’s collection of music and films. Electrically-operated tables, with recesses and connections for iPads and matching keyboards, can be fitted to the rear of the front seats, while on-board Wi-Fi through a dedicated router keep s the car connected to the outside world.

A frosted glass bottle cooler, complete with bespoke crystal champagne flutes, may be installed behind the rear armrest. A 2,200 watt Naim for Bentley premium audio system expands on the standard 14-speaker system and offers the best in-car sound experience in the world. Entertainment on-the-move can be provided through the Rear Seat Entertainment system, including two 8″ screens and Bluetooth headphones.

Signature Mulsanne updated for 2015

The signature Mulsanne ultra-luxury sedan has been updated for 2015, to complement the launch of the performance-focused Mulsanne Speed. The Mulsanne receives the same efficiency upgrade through new engine hardware, with its 512 PS (505 bhp), 1,020 Nm (752 lb.ft) 6¾-litre twin-turbo V8 engine also now 13% more efficient. Changes have also been made to the gearbox calibration of the Mulsanne, focussing on smoother, relaxed gear changes that promote a comfortable and refined driving experience. New paint colours, hide and veneers options are also available across the Mulsanne family.

Joss was founded in 1998 by industrial designer Matt Thomas, whose vision was to design and produce a world-class supercar that was to be Australia’s first homegrown supercar. In 2004 the company starting work on a test mule (JT1) and soon after plans for an upgraded prototype, the JP1, were devised.

Unfortunately, a lack of funding has meant the project has failed to make further progress. Instead of giving up, the people behind Joss, including a number of engineers with Formula One and Le Mans backgrounds, are hopeful crowdfunding will be able to get the project rolling once again.


You can now help the Joss supercar project via Kickstarter. The company is looking to raise $480,000 by October 1, and if it’s successful the company will be able to build the JP1 prototype and starting testing it by the end of 2015.

According to Joss, its new supercar will be powered by a 5.0-liter V-8 engine rated at about 563 horsepower and 412 pound-feet of torque. Drive will be to the rear wheels only, via an advanced seamless-shift gearbox, dubbed Zeroshift, being developed with British firm Albins. And lightweight construction, including a carbon fiber body, will ensure the car weighs less than 2,200 pounds.

Initial performance claims include a 0-62 mph time of 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 211 mph, putting in the same league as top supercars from the likes of Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren.


The expected price tag is 600,000 Aussie dollars, which at current exchange ratesequates to $556,000. Unfortunately, even Joss concedes that the car won’t be on sale “any time soon.”

Incredibly, Joss isn’t the only Australian company attempting to develop a world-beating supercar. Another, HAL, is attempting an even more ambitious project, one packing an engine that consists of two LS7 V-8s fused together.

Most automotive enthusiasts are always looking for the next big thing, and Italian designer Adriano Raeli is no exception. Although Ferrari debuted their LaFerrari not too long ago, Raeli thought it was due time to pull the curtain back on his Ferrari F80 Supercar.

Sure it’s nothing more than a concept, but the idea is certainly one worth taking a look at. The vehicle will be powered by a hybrid drivetrain that pairs a KERS system with a combustion engine to produce 1,200 horsepower. While this sounds pretty awesome, the manner in which it’s handled might ruffle more than a few feathers. The Art Center College of Design graduate has ditched the iconic V12 in favor of a 900 horsepower twin-turbo V8 setup (paired with the 300 horsepower KERS system). The vehicle’s proposed weight of 1,763 pounds means the 2-seater would sprint to 62 mph in just 2.2 seconds with a top speed of 310 miles per hour. While many of us would have liked to see this thing powered by a naturally aspirated V12 engine, it’s worth noting that the legendary Ferrari F40 was also powered by the same twin-turbocharged V8 power plant. Not to mention this thing is drop dead gorgeous.

It has emerged that the upcoming Caparo T1 Evolution is set to wear a sticker price of 1.1 million euros ($1.47 million in the U.S).

Such a price puts the Caparo T1 Evolution in a similar field to the McLaren P1 and Ferrari but production of the firm’s latest track-oriented machine will be far more limited. To put the price into comparison, the current Caparo T1 will set you back around 300,000 euros.

While it will retain the race DNA of the original T1, the T1 Evolution promises to be a significant improvement over it. Most notably, its yet to be revealed powertrain will deliver 700 hp while handling will be improved via stiffer suspension.

Elsewhere, ABS, traction and stability control systems will all come standard and unlike the original T1, it appears as though the T1 Evolution will actually have a fixed roof which is somewhat of a relief and should add an interesting point of difference from its predecessor and rivals. Caparo claims that the interior will be improved accordingly to provide improved driver comfort as well as better cockpit information and telemetry.

Beyond the car itself, a range of professional race car support products and services will be offered to create the perfect track experience.

Picture the Ariel Atom in your head. Not difficult, is it? The car’s skeletal structure is its defining feature, and that work of engineering art unsurprisingly finds its way onto the company’s new motorcycle, the Ariel Ace.

Like the Atom, it’s designed to be fast. But like the Atom, it’s also designed to be fun. Ariel founder Simon Saunders says the company did consider a hardcore sports bike, ready to topple Hondas, Suzukis, Ducatis and the like, but reasoned most riders can’t really extract their full potential. With a 1,200-cc Honda V-4 engine wedged inside the frame the Ace will

always be fast, but it’s designed to be easy to ride too–letting owners get the most from their purchase.

That V-4 develops 175 horsepower and powers the Ace to a 165 mph top speed. Acceleration times will almost certainly be enough to match–and possibly beat–the company’s insane lightweight road cars, and the whole bike has been designed for adaptability—letting customers design bikes as diverse as a conventional naked bike and a “low riding cruiser” from the same skeletal chassis.

The frame itself is the work of 70 hours of machining, according to Ariel, and is formed from six main pieces of billet section aluminum. Linkage or tube-type forks can be selected and Ohlins dampers are standard. That all goes some way to justifying the Ace’s hefty list price—it starts at £20,000 (approximately $34,000), and those customizable features probably won’t be cheap either. But at just 100-150 units per year it won’t be common either. If you’ve already got an Atom sitting in the garage, it could be an essential companion.

What does give automobiles that delicious scent, and where can buy it? Do they make an aftershave?

Chemicals — hundreds of different chemicals that are contained in car-interior components,” according to Jeff Gearhart, the Ecology Center’s research director. “They range from smells you would more commonly associate with paints and solvents to adhesives. It’s really a complex chemical cocktail mixture from all these multiple sources that you smell floating around in the air.”

They have a mask because they’re constantly made to smell that new-car smell. That smell is not necessarily healthy for you. Most of those odors are VOCs, volatile organic compounds. All of our fragrances are newcarsmell

naturally derived, combined to emulate a new-car smell without being bad for you.”

Lane Pietro, whose Lane’s Car Products also offers new-car and leather-scented air fresheners, does not recommend using his products on your face: “No, no, no,” he warns. Nor does Mr. Schneider: “Definitely not.” Which leaves Quaker State 5W30 as an automotive aftershave option

Who doesn’t love that factory fresh “new car smell”? It’s so well-liked that air fresheners and sprays have been produced in attempts to reclaim the odor.


But according to a new study from the nonprofit Ecology Center and, what you might actually be sniffing are toxic fumes from chemicals used to create the car interior.

“Research shows that vehicle interiors contain a unique cocktail of hundreds of toxic chemicals that off-gas in small, confined spaces,” Jeff Gearhart, research director at the Ecology Center, said in a written statement. “Since these chemicals are not regulated, consumers have no way of knowing the dangers they face. Our testing is intended to expose those dangers and encourage manufacturers to use safer alternatives.”

For the study, researchers at the Ecology Center tested more than 200 of the most popular 2011-2012 automobiles for chemicals that “off-gas” from interior car parts such as the steering wheel, dashboard, armrests, and seats. They assigned a “vehicle rating” based on the amount of chemicals they found.

The researchers found more than 275 different chemicals in the interiors of cars. Some chemicals of concern include bromine from brominated flame retardants (BFRs) which are added to plastics to make them less flammable, chlorine used for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) used for plastics and windshields, lead, and heavy metals.

The researchers said BFR exposure has been tied to thyroid problems, learning and memory impairment, decreased fertility, and behavioral changes while PVCs which contain chemicals called phthalates are linked to decreased fertility, and problems with the liver, testes, thyroid, ovaries, kidneys, and blood.

Which car did the Ecology Center deem healthiest?

At the top of the list for the most healthy car interior is the 2012 Honda Civic. Researchers gave it a score of 0.46, saying it did not have any bromine-based flame retardants, and used PVC-free fabrics on the interior.

“We’re pleased to be recognized by for our efforts,” Marcos Frommer, manager of corporate affairs & communications at American Honda, said in the statement. “Over the past decade, Honda has taken a number of steps to reduce or remove chemicals of concern from our vehicles.”

The industry trade group Global Automakers and car company Kia Motors America had no comment when reached by HealthPop, and the Auto Alliance, Chrysler Motors, Mitsubishi Motors did not respond for requests for comment at press time.

Not all is bleak about the state of  new car smells. The researchers said overall, cars have improved from when they first began testing.

“Since we first started testing in 2006, we’ve seen an improvement on average in the vehicles that are in the market,” Gearhart told CBS Detroit. “So, we know there is a trend toward healthier interiors, but what we really want to see is to see that accelerated.”

Today, 17 percent of new vehicles have PVC-free interiors and 60 percent are produced without BFRs, the Ecology Center said. Before 2006, 0 percent of cars had PVC-free interiors.

Okay Toyota, make up your mind. Figure it out. Quit playing games with our heart. Either build a bunch of variations of the excellent GT86 (also known as the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ) or don’t. At this point, we’re just tired of the back and forth. After no shortage of denials, an Australian website is claiming that Toyota is reconsidering convertible, four-door, turbocharged and all-wheel-drive hybrid variants of the GT86. Kindly pass all the salt.


It’s not that we don’t want to believe the Aussies; we do. But when the story lists the same “sources in Japan” as a lot of the other denials and confirmations about GT86/BRZ/FR-S variants, well, there’s a certain sense of the “Boy That Cried Wolf,” here. Ignoring all that, then, what does claim to know?

Sources claim the GT86 Convertible will arrive in October 2014, while the turbocharged and hybrid sedans are slated for 2016.


Well, the GT86 sedan will be stretched by just a shade over 20 inches. It’s unclear if this is in reference to the wheelbase or the car’s overall length. It will also be 3.9 inches taller, while retaining the coupe’s width.

Two engines will be on offer for this hypothetical four-door. The range-topping model will get a Subaru-sourced, 2.5-liter, turbocharged flat-four, with 295 horsepower. That sounds a lot like the WRX STI’s engine. The boxer mill will be tied to an eight-speed automatic – it’s not mentioned if a manual will be available. The same engine will make its way to the GT86 Coupe.


The other engine is a hybrid – likely a Toyota hybrid system that’s been made to play nice with the flat-four in the Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid. In-wheel electric motors will deliver drive power to the front wheels, giving the GT86 Sedan all-wheel drive. Both models will arrive in 2016, although the turbo will precede the hybrid by a few months.

Assuming the prices listed are in Australian dollars, the GT86 Hybrid Sedan will start at an eye-watering $46,175, while the turbocharged four-door will $36,940, according to today’s exchange rates. Now, the GT86 Coupe is already priced a few thousand US dollars higher in Australia, so if these alleged variants were to make it across the Pacific, we could expect slightly lower prices. Still, we imagine any $40,000-plus FR-S would be a tough sell.

As for the convertible, Motoring is claiming it’ll arrive in October of this year, and will retain the coupe’s 2.0-liter, flat-four engine, despite a 66-pound weight penalty, thanks to its electric canvas roof. This doesn’t address Subaru’s apparent refusal to do a convertible BRZ.

As we said, all of this should be taken with many, many grains of salt. We’ve been subjected to many rumors about Toyota and Subaru’s sports car dating back to its very birth. So far, none of them have proven true (if they had, we’d have had a convertible by now). Still, if Motoring is correct, we could be in for a very exciting few years with this little rear-driver.

BMW Delivers First All-Electric i3 in the U.S. EPA-rated 81-mile range



The first U.S. BMW i3 customer is now happily zipping along somewhere in his new car. Or possibly staring lovingly at it in his garage – we’re not sure which. That man, Tufts University professor and electric vehicle aficionado Charles Rabie, was handed the keys at the BMW of Boston dealership earlier today, thus beginning a flood of upcoming deliveries from the pool of hundreds currently awaiting for their owners at the Port Jersey Vehicle Distribution Center in Jersey City, NJ.


And now, when Mr. Rabie sets off in his spiffy electric Bimmer, he’ll know exactly how far the EPA thinks he can go on a full charge of its 22-kWh battery. Speaking with Dave Buchko from BMW Corporate Communications, we learned the government agency has given the i3 an official range rating of 81 miles. Efficiency-wise, that breaks down to 138 MPGe city, 111 hwy, and 124 combined for the city car.

Of course, we don’t expect the good professor to experience any difficulties dealing with the sub-100 mile range. As a former BMW ActiveE driver, he’s had plenty of opportunity to become accustomed to the foibles (and advantages) of piloting a battery-powered vehicle. Tufts University professor of practice Charles Rabie to receive the first U.S. BMW i3.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – May 2, 2014… Today, BMW delivered the first all-electric BMW i3 in the U.S. to Boston resident and Tufts University professor of practice Charles Rabie at the BMW of Boston dealership. Hundreds of BMW i3 vehicles are currently at U.S. facilities and ready to be delivered to customers nationwide, ushering in a new era of electromobility.

Rabie is an electric vehicle advocate and has been driving the BMW ActiveE since 2012. Also among this first group set to receive a BMW i3 is Los Angeles-based former E! Entertainment leading correspondent Ashlan Gorse Cousteau, married to renowned documentary filmmaker and environmentalist Philippe Cousteau, grandson of Jacques Cousteau.

The BMW i3 is the first of the BMW i vehicles constructed from the ground up primarily of carbon fiber to enter the U.S. market. With 170 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque hybrid-synchronous electric motor, the fully electric BMW i3 is electrified by a 22-kWh lithium-ion battery, good for 80-100 miles of emission-free driving. Agile and engaging to drive, the BMW i3 is ideally suited for dense urban areas. The BMW i3 has a base MSRP of $41,350 and the range-extender model will have a starting MSRP of $45,200.
