The do-it-yourself movement centers around two linked principles: learning a skill and saving money. Chevy’s Engine Build Experience, which lets Corvette Z06 buyers spend a day hand-assembling the supercharged, 650-horsepower engine that will go in their brand-new American supercar, definitely has the first part down. But at a cost of $5000, you won’t save any money opting for the build-your-own package.

The Engine Build Experience invites customers who’ve special-ordered a brand-new Z06 to come to the Performance Build Center, the facility within the Bowling Green Assembly Plant where every Z06 engine is assembled. The package lets buyers spend a full day at the center at the behest of an engine-assembly technician, who will instruct and oversee as the customer puts together the powerplant of his or her Z06. Each customer-built mill gets a personalized engine plaque indicating the owner/builder’s name and the date of assembly, along with professional photos documenting the whole experience.

Of course, you won’t walk in the door in the morning and drive out in the brand-new Z06 you (sort of) built yourself. “It’s important for customers to understand their engine won’t be installed the day after they build it,” said Harlan Charles, Corvette product manager. “It will flow into the scheduling process for vehicle assembly, which depends on a number of logistical variables.” And of course, travel to Bowling Green and lodging is up to the customer.

The Valet Mode of the Stingray’s Performance Data Recorder system is a cool feature—even if it has drawn some heat for its potential illegal recording of audio. But you don’t need audio to see what’s wrong with this valet’s treatment of a new 2015 Corvette.

As Corvette Forum notes, the parking garage joyride took place at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, California—not exactly a wild and wooly night club where you might expect such extracurricular vehicular behavior.

Chevy is really selling its 2015 Colorado mid-size pickup truck as a lifestyle vehicle. After unveiling customized Colorados at the Texas State Fair and SEMA, it brought yet another Colorado-based concept to the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Named after a model that used to be part of the old S-10 and Blazer range, the ZR2 is based on the Colorado Z71, and features the new 2.8-liter Duramax turbodiesel four-cylinder engine that’s been confirmed for the 2016 Colorado. The diesel produces the stock 181 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, which will be the only option on production models.

ZR2-specific changes include more aggressive front and rear fascias and off-road tires on bead-lock-style rims—including a spare mounted in the bed, just like in a Baja race truck. Chevy says the new bodywork increases approach and departure angles, while a set of remote-reservoir, mono-tube shocks and locking front and rear differentials help the truck deal with rough terrain. If the terrain gets a little too rough, there’s also a winch, as well as a 48-inch Hi-Jack lift in the bed.

This may be a performance-focused truck, but that doesn’t mean Chevy skipped the creature comforts. The interior features Jet Black leather with orange contrast stitching to match the orange exterior highlights. The instrument cluster features an inclinometer, and there are switches to control the winch and locking diffs.

Overall, anyone who can remember the old S-10 ZR2 should find this concept truck to be a worthy successor, but will they ever be able to buy it?

Chevy says it’s gauging public interest on a possible production version, and there’s been talk of a Colorado-based Ford Raptor fighter as well, so perhaps we’ll see some kind of mid-size performance truck in showrooms in the near future.

The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is the most powerful production car ever from General Motors, and it’s a technological landmark in the long lineage of Corvettes. It’s also more affordable than you might think.

The 2015 Z06 starts at $78,995* – not chump change, but well below the price ranges of key competitors.

As was announced earlier today, the 2015 Z06 has a starting price of $78,995 for the coupe and $83,995 for the convertible, *including $995 in destination charges. That’s not chump change, but it’s well below the price ranges of several of its key competitors.

The Corvette has long been compared with the Porsche 911, but the Z06’s 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque easily eclipses the most powerful 911, the Turbo S (560 hp, 516 lb-ft). The Z06 also costs less than half as much, as the Turbo S has a starting MSRP of $182,700, and then tacks on a $995-shipping charge.
A closer comparison – pricewise – would be the Porsche Cayman GTS, which comes in with an MSRP of $75,200 – that’s $2,800 cheaper than the Vette. Thing is, it has 310 fewer hp.

The Audi R8 is a slightly more formidable competitor to the Z06 based on pure power. The V10 Plus has 550 hp, and its mid-engine configuration is a better layout for pure driving dynamics. But, its pricing starts at $173,500, not including a $1,250-destination charge. The base R8 with its 430-hp V8 begins at $115,000.

Then there’s another long-running Corvette rival, the Dodge Viper SRT, and its 640-hp V10 engine. For 2014, the Viper costs $99,885, which is up $2,000 from 2013. Add in $1,995 shipping (your Viper does come in an enclosed trailer), and the total comes to $101,880. The price listed on the SRT website is $102,485, which includes the gas-guzzler tax, but not shipping. Regardless, it’s about $22,000 more than the new Z06.

The all-wheel-drive Nissan GT-R, meanwhile, dials up 545 hp from a turbo V6 for $101,770, which rises to $103,365 with shipping.

The Z06 also grades out well in the world of exotics. The Ferrari FF produces 651 hp from its V12, which edges out the Z06 (barely), though the Ferrari only makes 504 lb-ft – all for a sticker of about $300,000 – though it does offer all-wheel drive.

Flipping the script on the Z06, the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat pumps out 707 horses for a price tag of $59,995 and a $995 destination charge brings the sticker to $60,990. That’s more power for less money than the Corvette, but the Challenger is also a much larger car, and it’s more of a muscle car than a sports car.

In this age of gaudy horsepower figures and prices, the Hellcat vs. Z06 is a fitting example of how modern sports cars are not all created equal. While the Hellcat can blow the doors off of the Vette with its power specs, the Z06 is assuredly a better track car. Porsche and Ferrari loyalists will naturally gravitate to and pay more for products from their brands, and no horsepower figure or “low-low” sticker price will change that. Plus, the sports-car segment is small enough in terms of sales so as to seemingly play by its own rules. No matter how much horsepower the Corvette has, it won’t do much to erode GM’s Corporate Average Fuel Economy standing.

While the Hellcat can blow the doors off of the Vette with its statistics, the Z06 is assuredly a better track car.

Still, the Z06 creates a seriously compelling value case for enthusiasts in search of power for a competitive price. Corvette spokesman Monte Doran reminded Autoblog that sharing parts and technology among Chevy vehicles has allowed the brand to keep prices of its high-end sports cars relatively low. The 2015 Chevy Corvette Z06 is the first Z06 to use a supercharged engine, the first to have a true convertible variant and the first to offer an eight-speed automatic transmission.

“Chevrolet has developed a successful model for sharing components with Corvette and other models in the portfolio,” he said. “For example, the eight-speed transmission was designed for Z06, and will also be used in full-size trucks with the 6.2L; the carbon-ceramic brakes are shared between the Camaro Z/28 and Corvette Z06. This enables Chevrolet to offer stratospheric-levels of performance without stratospheric prices.”

Dave Sullivan, manager of product analysis for AutoPacific, an automotive research firm, concurs:

“By sharing parts and components with higher-volume vehicles, GM can keep the price down on the Corvette,” he said. “The Z06 could prove to be one of the memorable bargains of the century.”

Sullivan expects the horsepower wars to continue, which is only good for enthusiasts.

“Look at the Ford GT a decade ago,” he said. “It was about $150,000 for 550 HP and 0-60 in 3.7 seconds. For a little more than half that, you can get more power, better performance, and a car that the manufacturer is committed to building for many years to come. Inflation? What inflation?”

The grisly moniker was earned because all of the vehicles belonged to the president of a blood testing company who is facing prison time for alleged bribery, according to Hemmings. After all, they are muscle cars bought with actual blood money. The seven-vehicle collection includes some of the ultimate muscle cars ever made, and the original buyer clearly had an eye for rarity.

This cornucopia of V8 power includes a teal 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429, a 1967 Shelby GT500 Mustang, an orange 1970 Plymouth Superbird, a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS convertible and perhaps most prized of all – a trio of 1969 Yenko Chevys with a Chevelle, Nova and Camaro all represented. From the included photos, all of them look to be in fantastic condition.

A.J Willner Auctions, which is coordinating the sale, has authenticating documents for all seven vehicles on its website. “This is a live auction, all bidders will need to attend and bid in person with the required $10,000 cashier’s check as a deposit on them,” the company says about the event. If you can get past how the cars were purchased, there could be some bargains here.

Currently, the only natural-gas-powered passenger car offered for sale by an OEM in the US is the Honda Civic Natural Gas. Starting this fall, that long-running CNG car will be joined by a CNG-burning 2015 Chevy Impala for both fleet and retail customers. General Motors announced today that the car will start at $37,385, plus an $825 destination charge. That comes to $38,210 before taxes and options.

Those options include two trim lines, the base LS and the upper-level LT. Chevy doesn’t break out the details in the press release announcing the price, but you can see the trim details for the standard gas-powered 2014 Impala here. Exact information on the 2015 models is not available just yet, but GM spokesman Chad Lyons told AutoblogGreen that the equipment that you see listed on the site for 2014 is “almost exactly the same” as what will be available for 2015.

That means the LS will come with 18-inch aluminum wheels, electric variable-assist power steering, projector-beam headlamps, and 10 air bags. The LT adds an eight-inch touch screen with MyLink, premium Cloth interior and dual-zone automatic climate controls. The cost for this upgrade is unspecified. For CNG purposes, we can ignore the numerical prefix used for the gas-powered LT trims, since that denominates the engine type, and all the CNG models use a 3.6-liter engine with hardened valves and valve seats that can better handle natural gas. The trunk capacity also drops from 18.8 cubic feet to 10 cu .ft. in order to fit in the CNG tank that holds the equivalent of 7.8 gallons of gas. That amount of CNG should move you 150 city miles, which is around 19 mpg, but official EPA numbers are not yet available. With the addition of the gasoline on board, the overall range is 500 city miles. The car burns CNG when available and switches to gas with “no interruption” either when the tank is empty or when the driver selects the gas tank. Find more details in the press release below.

GM says the CNG Impala will will be available nationwide this fall. CNG is a growing fuel in the US, thanks in part to fracking. The Civic Natural Gas, which starts at $26,640, is growing towards a nationwide availability. Next year, for example, the Shell Eco-marathon Americas in Detroit will allow CNG for the first time.

Chevrolet Announces Pricing of CNG-Capable 2015 Impala

 

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The 2015 bi-fuel Chevrolet Impala, the industry’s only manufacturer-produced full-size sedan in North America that can run on both compressed natural gas (CNG) and gasoline, will have a starting price of $38,210, including an $825 destination charge, but excluding tax, title, license, dealer fees and operational equipment.

The bi-fuel Impala will be available in the fourth quarter to both fleet and retail customers in either an LS base trim or a higher-equipped LT trim.

The vehicle is available only with a 3.6L hardened engine with hardened valves and valve seats for improved wear resistance and durability with the CNG fuel system. The CNG tank mounted in the trunk has the equivalent capacity of 7.8 gallons of gasoline, which is expected to offer approximately 150 city miles of range on compressed natural gas based on GM testing. EPA estimates are not yet finalized, but with gasoline and compressed natural gas combined, expected range is 500 city miles based on GM testing.

In addition to average fuel savings of nearly $1.25 per gasoline-gallon-equivalent based on current fuel prices, natural gas is one of the cleanest-burning fuels available, so vehicles that run on CNG produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions than gasoline-powered cars.

“The Impala nameplate has recently seen market share growth, and critical acclaim for its design, functionality and low cost of ownership. Now, with the addition of bi-fuel capabilities it will also help customers reduce fuel costs and greenhouse gas emissions,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president, GM Fleet & Commercial.

The Impala will primarily run on CNG and once the fuel tank is depleted, the system automatically and seamlessly switches to run on gasoline. Drivers who wish to change fuels while driving can do so by simply pushing a button on the dashboard, which uses an LED light to indicate when CNG is being used. There is no interruption in the vehicle’s performance.

The CNG fuel system is validated by GM covered by GM’s three-year, 36,000-mile new vehicle limited bumper-to-bumper warranty and five-year, 100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, whichever comes first. The vehicle is expected to meet all EPA and California Air Resources Board emission certification requirements.

The bi-fuel Impala, assembled at GM’s Oshawa, Ontario, plant, will be available for purchase later this year at any of the more than 3,200 Chevrolet dealerships nationwide.

When you see a golden bowtie, you know you’re looking at a Chevrolet. And that’s completely by design. First introduced way back in 1913, the famed Bowtie has gone through several permutations, but it’s never quite been modified like it has for the new Chevy Camaro Z/28. Instead of a solid bow, as we’ve become accustomed to seeing, the Z/28’s Bowtie is hollow.

According to Chevy’s press release, which can be found below, Powertrain Cooling Development engineer Richard Quinn noticed during wind-tunnel testing that the Z/28’s Bowtie-emblazoned grille was pushing air away instead of allowing it to hit the radiator. The solution was to cut out the center of the emblem, leaving a chrome outline that lets air through.

GM’s engineers have named the new Bowtie-shaped emblem the Flowtie. Clever, boys. An additional three cubic meters of air is let into the engine bay per minute, lowering coolant and oil temperatures by 2°F.

Traditional badge modified in the name of all-out track performance.

DETROIT – In developing the 2014 Camaro Z/28, the team scrutinized every component looking for ways to improve track performance, lap after lap. Even the iconic Chevrolet bowtie faced audit.

During aerodynamics testing, Powertrain Cooling Development engineer Richard Quinn noticed that the bowtie on the Z/28’s grill was displacing air away from the radiator, which can impact engine cooling – an important aspect for all vehicles, especially track-oriented cars.

Removing the bowtie altogether did not seem to be an appropriate solution. Instead, Quinn took a cut-off wheel to the gold fill of the bowtie, leaving the silver outline intact. He installed the prototype on the grill and retested to see the results.

“There are engineers in our team that race as a hobby,” said Quinn, “and we used that racer’s mindset to look for ways small or large to get better performance out of the Z/28. Even the smallest details on the Z/28 were weighed for cooling benefit, and this is one that stuck.”

The “Flowtie,” as the engineers now affectionately refer to it, is just the chrome outline of the traditional bowtie, with the center removed. This simple solution alone was enough to allow three additional cubic meters of air into the engine per minute. Engineers found the Flowtie dropped the temperatures of engine coolant and engine oil by 2°F (1.2°C) during extended track sessions. That seemingly small improvement was enough to justify making the Flowtie standard on every new Z/28.

“The Flowtie is just one example of the team’s focus on track performance,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “That same attention to detail is evident throughout the cooling systems for the LS7 engine, as well as the carbon ceramic brakes and the differential.”

The naturally aspirated Z/28 weighs 300 pounds less than the supercharged Camaro ZL1 and 55 pounds lighter than the Camaro 1LE – with changes ranging from lightweight wheels to thinner rear-window glass.

“The Camaro Z/28 has more than 190 unique parts, compared to a Camaro SS,” Oppenheiser said. “Like the Flowtie, each of these parts were changed with one objective: to deliver incredible performance on the track – not just for the first lap, but lap, after lap, after lap.”

The 2014 Camaro Z/28 arrives in dealerships this spring.
