BMW Maintenance No Longer Transferrable to 2nd owner

One of the best innovations in car buying in recent years is the rise of no-cost scheduled maintenance programs. Many people feel really anxious about taking their car in for service, and these deals help mitigate that somewhat. Obviously, it’s not free for automakers to implement the offers, and now BMW is altering the way its four-year, 50,000-mile Maintenance Program works for some owners. “To keep such an offer sustainable we had to make a change,” said Kenn Sparks, Manager of Business Communications at BMW North America, to Autoblog via email.

The original person to buy or lease the model isn’t going to see any difference, but the program is no longer transferable to a second owner, unless that person is in the owners household. Those people include includes parents, siblings, grandparents and grandchildren, in addition to someone like a spouse or children. The original owner just has to advise BMW of new user. “The program change will affect 2nd owners and for them BMW is introducing an optional full-maintenance product that covers the vehicle up to 100,000 miles,” said Sparks. For model year 2015 or later vehicles sold or leased by an authorized BMW center on or after July 1, 2014, BMW Maintenance Program coverage is provided for the exclusive benefit of the initial purchaser, owner, or lessee of a new vehicle, sales demonstrator vehicle, Aftersales Mobility Program (AMP) vehicle, or BMW Group company vehicle from an authorized BMW center in the United States (including Puerto Rico). Accordingly, BMW Maintenance Program coverage, with one exception, is not transferable to subsequent purchasers, owners, or lessees. The sole exception to the non-transferability of BMW Maintenance Program coverage is that household transfers – transfers within the United States (including Puerto Rico) to members of the household of the initial purchaser, owner, or lessee of a BMW vehicle from an authorized BMW center – will not terminate BMW Maintenance Program coverage. Household transfers are limited solely to transfers to a current or former spouse or spousal equivalent, child, sibling, parent, grandparent, or grandchild from the initial purchaser, owner, or lessee of a vehicle. In the event of a household transfer, purchasers, owners, or lessees of a BMW vehicle should promptly advise their authorized BMW center to document and confirm the household transfer for purposes of BMW Maintenance Program coverage. The payoff of a loan on a vehicle by the initial purchaser and the purchase of a leased vehicle by the initial lessee are not considered transfers for purposes of BMW Maintenance Program coverage.

The BMW Maintenance Program covers all factory recommended maintenance as determined by the Condition Based Service (CBS) system. Additional specific items that need replacement due to normal wear and tear, and that are not covered by the original New Vehicle Limited Warranty – such as brake pads, brake rotors, and wiper blade inserts – are included, provided wear and tear exceeds BMW wear limits. Any applicable adjustments required due to normal operating conditions are also included.

Exclusions from coverage include the following:

Items reimbursable under your New Vehicle Limited Warranty

Gasoline and diesel fuel

Gasoline and diesel fuel additive

Diesel glow plugs

Diesel particulate filter

Windshield washer additive (except when in conjunction with scheduled maintenance)

Tires, wheel alignment, tire balance and rotation

Parking brake shoes/linings

Reset Tire Pressure Monitor

Wear and tear of soft trim items, such as: seats, carpets, moldings, headliner, door panels and all chrome trim

Damage, including consequential, which results from negligence, improper operation of the vehicle, wear and tear or deterioration due to driving habits or conditions, improper repair, environmental influences, flood, accident or fire damage, road salt corrosion, alteration, installation of non-genuine BMW accessories, or use of improper, poor quality or contaminated fuel

Altered or unreadable Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or odometer irregularities or vehicles where the true mileage cannot be determined

Maintenance or repair after the vehicle is deemed a total loss

Maintenance or repairs performed by other than an authorized BMW center within the United States or Puerto Rico

‘Topping off’ low fluids (e.g., engine oil, antifreeze, washer fluid, etc.) except when done in conjunction with a scheduled maintenance or other required maintenance work (as outlined in the customized maintenance checklist printout) that is performed during an applicable Maintenance Program period
Vehicles used in competitive events

Oil changes performed outside the recommended maintenance intervals as indicated by the Condition Based Service

Any other vehicle-specific exclusions described in the Service and Warranty Booklet included with the vehicle

Mercedes-Benz is developing an extended range of AMG Sport models to be positioned underneath its traditional line of AMG cars

If you want a performance-oriented Audi but can’t stretch to an RS model, you can go for an S instead. If you want a performance-oriented BMW but can’t stretch to a full M car, you can go for an M Performance model instead. If you want a performance-oriented Mercedes but can’t stretch to an AMG model… you’re out of luck. But you won’t be for long, as circulating reports indicate that Mercedes Benz is planning to launch a second line of AMG Sport models.

As we reported a few months ago, Mercedes is preparing to launch a C450 AMG Sport to slot in between the new C400 and upcoming C63 AMG, with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 producing around 367 horsepower – a few dozen horses more than the C400 but still a hundred or so shy of the C63. The model was subsequently spotted in wagon guise, pictured above.

The C-Class won’t be the only one to get the AMG Sport treatment, however. Autocar reports that, while not all Mercedes models are slated at first to get the mid-level performance upgrade, many models will – including the A-, E-, S-, M, GL, GLK and GLA-Class models, as well as the upcoming MLC crossover coupe.

While they won’t all get the same engine, each AMG Sport model is expected to undergo a similar transformation, with upgraded suspensions, wider tracks, reprogrammed electronics and more. Expect both gasoline and diesel versions to be offered (at least in certain markets), taking Mercedes into performance diesel territory for the first time to rival BMW’s trio of M550d, X5 M50d and X6 M50d as well as Audi’s SQ5 TDI and (currently concept-only) RS5 TDI.

The new line, to be jointly developed by Mercedes and its AMG performance division, would also give the Silver Star a three-tiered performance line-up, starting with the new AMG Sport line, followed by the AMG range and topping out with the AMG S models.

Bayerische Motoren Werke AG’s M235i high-performance car has secured the German automaker its highest-ever score from Consumer Reports, beating the costlier Porsche 911 and Chevrolet Corvette in road-test reviews.

The M235i, which earned 98 out of a possible 100 points, scored better that the discontinued BMW 135i, making it the Munich-based carmaker’s highest-rated vehicle of all time, according to Consumer Reports. That puts BMW close to the score of 99 Tesla Motors Inc. (TSLA) received from the magazine last year for its electric Model S.

As road-tested, the M235i had a price tag of $50,400, or about $60,000 less than the Porsche 911 Carrera S from Volkswagen AG, which received a score of 95. The BMW is $23,000 cheaper than General Motors Co. (GM)’s Chevrolet Corvette Stingray LT3, which scored a 92.

The M235i has a “classic BMW mold” and offers “tenacious cornering” on the track, while embracing the company’s recent focus on comfort and luxury, the Yonkers, New York-based magazine said.

“This really is a totally dual-purpose car,” Jon Linkov, Consumer Reports deputy cars editor, said in an interview. “This is a car you could drive to work every day of the week without it killing you. And then you could go take it to the track on the weekend.”

BMW along with Daimler AG Mercedes-Benz brand are among luxury carmakers expanding with lower-cost models as they look to capture new buyers. BMW, which also shifted away from its “Ultimate Driving Machine” slogan in recent years, is borrowing from its old marketing approach with the M235i, Consumer Reports said.

‘Inspiring, Sporty’

“It seems like it has almost a direct lineage,” to BMWs, Linkov said. “This is just an inspiring, sporty car, plain and simple.”

While the Corvette and 911 both “pack more punch” than the M235i on the road, the latter car comes relatively close and provides more comfort.

Consumer Reports evaluates cars on how well they drive, their interior-finish quality, safety and reliability.

The 911 and Corvette, both recently redesigned, had “excellent and near-identical acceleration and braking results,” according to the magazine’s reviewers. The 911 edged out the Corvette in its higher maximum speed and handling.

The Corvette has “quick reflexes” though the vehicle is more “about power than grace,” the magazine said.

None of the three vehicles received a recommendation from Consumer Reports because the M235i and Corvette are too new for the reviewers to have reliability data, while the 911 is listed as having below average reliability.

Tesla Plans

All three models fell short of the mark set by Tesla’s Model S. That score matched the one previously set in 2007 by the Lexus LS460L from Toyota Motor Corp.

Tesla’s founder Elon Musk is scouting sites for a “gigafactory” to supply low-cost lithium-ion batteries both to boost production of his electric vehicles and for home-power storage. The company plans to boost deliveries of its Model S sedan that’s priced from about $71,000 by more than 56 percent this year.

It’s hard to say what a coupe is anymore. Is it merely a car with two doors? Does it have to have an arching roofline? Do frameless windows count for anything? Can a five-door hatchback or even an SUV be a coupe? At some point in the last few years, nearly everything we thought made a coupe a coupe has been challenged by something that calls itself a coupe, but to most people isn’t. Our friends at BMW have led most of this line of questioning.

The new 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is one of the latest Bimmers to challenge the moniker (which also challenges the idea of “Gran,” for that matter), and unlike some of its other “coupe” variations – we’re looking at you, X6 – this one is a pretty one. The 4 Series Gran Coupe is essentially a four-door version of the 4 Series, which is itself a two-door version of the 3 Series. Huh? Wouldn’t that simply make it another 3 Series? Of course, but this one is prettier, as it uses the 4’s sexier body styling, with its lower nose, wider-looking stance and edgier lighting graphics. It is also technically a five-door hatchback, not a sedan per se, and it utilizes frameless side door glass, which apparently does count for something in BMW coupe-land. Significantly, the 4 Gran Coupe’s wheelbase is identical to the two-door; if it was longer – as is the case with the 3 Series and 5 Series hatchbacks – that might make it a “Gran Turismo.” Confused yet?

We recently got our first chance to drive the 4 Series Gran Coupe at a press launch in Spain, and while the only version we were given was a rear-drive 428i Gran Coupe with the M Sport contents, the harrowing roads around Bilbao gave us a good idea of what this car is all about from a driving dynamics standpoint. Here’s some of what we found:

Driving Notes
The Gran Coupe will be available in base 428i, all-wheel-drive 428i xDrive, and 435i forms, starting at $41,225, $43,225, and 446,725, respectively, including $925 for destination. A Luxury Line package with elegant trimmings can be added for another $1,700 on the 428i models and $1,400 for the 435i, while a Sport Line brings larger wheels (18-inchers vs. 17s), sport seats, and various other sport-flavored bits for $2,100 on the 428 models or $1,700 for the 435i. And of course, an M Sport model builds on the Sport Line’s stuff with an aero kit, a sport steering wheel, and some blue trim pieces while adding $3,500 to the bottom line of the 428 models, or $3,100 to the 435. Of course, there are a many more a la carte options, and a suite of technology and convenience packages ready to bloat the final out-the-door price up over $60k if you’re really feeling spendy.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe looks longer than the two-door version, but in actuality, it’s identical in length and width. The roof is a half an inch taller, and the roofline stretches nearly all the way to the back of the car. It has an aggressive stance and excellent proportions. Incidentally, the 3 Series is also about the same length, about a half an inch narrower, and another inch and a half taller. The Gran Coupe may be the best-looking of the lot.

Alas, there is a catch, which comes in the form of more than 200 pounds of added weight due to structural reinforcement, including the weight of the standard power tailgate. Happily, BMW tuned the Gran Coupe to mimic the sporty feeling of the two-door 4 Series, changing only what it had to under the skin in order to accommodate the added mass and accompanying change in the center of gravity. To a large extent, it succeeded in keeping it quite the capable performance sedan. Or coupe. Or whatever it is.

Inside, the occupants sit a little lower in the 4 than in the 3, giving you a feeling of intimacy not found in any of the Threes. The black headliner also contributes to this sensation. We also expected to get more of a “sitting in a bathtub” feeling than we actually experienced. The M Sport’s seats are absolutely fantastic, as is the perfectly contoured steering wheel.
The 4 Series Gran Coupe is pure 3 Series inside, albeit with a one-inch lower seating position for both rows of seats. This makes the lower roofline less impactful on rear-seat headroom than you’d expect; indeed, this model’s longer roofline allows adults to ride back there more comfortably than in the regular 4 Series (non-Gran) coupe.

The lower seat height also helps the rear seat not feel as cramped as one might expect, with six-footers able to squeeze back there better than in the two-door. Legroom is also about the same as in the 3 and the two-door 4, which is to say decent. It’s not the limousine that the 3 Series GT is, but it’s pretty good by “coupe” standards.

The Gran Coupe’s hatchback body makes for a wide and deep cargo area, and the rear seats now fold 40/20/40 style. A power liftgate with programmable opening height is standard, and can be opened by waving your foot beneath the bumper. The drawback? Seeing out through the sliver-like rear window is a real challenge when you’re on the road.
The rear doors open quite wide, making it easy to load people and things back there despite their short length. You won’t bump your head on the roof as you get in, either, since the roofline doesn’t slope down until aft of the door.

The turbo four-cylinder is sufficiently powerful and sounds pretty awesome, though the Gran Coupe’s extra 100 kilos or so makes itself known. Speed demons are going to want to spring for the 435i, which we are looking forward to driving ourselves in the States soon.
The eight-speed automatic – the only available transmission – is as magical as ever in this installation, and the paddle shifters operate with a satisfyingly snickety action and are easy to find even with some lock dialed in.

High-speed stability is and always has been a 3 and 4 Series forte, and it is no less so in this case. We only wish we could select Sport mode on the Driving Dynamics Control-which adjusts shift points, throttle response, and steering effort-to get its better-weighted steering along with the top two gears on the highway, but unfortunately, Sport mode locks them out.
Grip levels are high during aggressive cornering, though as we’ve noticed in other 3s and 4s, the steering response is a little delayed at initial turn-in, resulting in a tendency toward understeer and early intervention of stability control. The lack of feedback through the wheel doesn’t help matters, but the car does go where you point it. We just wish it told us what was going on in the meantime.

BMW has long been a master of shock absorption, and as with so many other Bimmers, the 4 Series Gran Coupe takes the edge off bumps without floating over them. The 4 Series Gran Coupe we drove, with the M Sport equipment, is heavenly in this regard. The only demerit: tire noise on the highway can get loud, especially on grainy pavement.

The M Sport line is available with upgraded brakes that offer excellent pedal feel and crisp response; we would recommend the $500 upgrade (on top of the $3,500 you’ll pay for the M Sport pack) if you like to drive like we do, especially if hills happen to be part of your everyday commuting.

Given their similar interiors as well as the added practicality of the 4 Series Gran Coupe’s hatchback body, we can’t help but wonder why anyone would choose a 3 Series, which comes in about $3k less, similarly equipped. That would make a big difference if the MSRP was under $20k, but at this price point, the upgrade to something that looks and feels more special than a workaday 3er seems more than worth it.

If there are any BMW drivers out there who feel their $141,000 760LI just isn’t big, luxurious or sleek enough, they should take note of the automaker’s latest concept car.
At this week’s Beijing Auto Show, BMW presented its Vision Future Luxury Concept to the public, rumored to be the basis for the upcoming ultra-premium 9-Series model.

What the production incarnation of the Vision Future Luxury Concept looks like is unknown, but BMW board member Ian Robertson told Reuters this week that there may be a niche for $200,000-to-$400,000 sedans. That’s Bentley and Rolls-Royce territory, and a bold move upmarket for BMW.

The Vision Future Luxury Concept, with the aggressive forward-raked shark nose along with BMW’s signature kidney grille, is the company’s newest derivation of the design theme first presented last year with the Pininfarina V-12 Gran Lusso Coupe. The front fascia is flanked by four of the company’s state-of-the-art laser headlights.

The BMW’s super-sleek side profile hides its flush-mounted suicide doors that open to reveal the concept’s airy interior. According to the automaker, the Vision Future Luxury’s carbon-fiber construction allows the car to maintain a high level of structural rigidity while affording the passengers an open and spacious cockpit.

The Vision Future Luxury Concept comes packed with just about every technological feature in BMW’s arsenal. In addition to the laser headlights, the concept’s interior will feature the company’s “three-dimensional display” technology that will blend the car’s multiple-display screen into the car’s interior accents, allowing the passengers to feel a greater sense of continuity in dash.

As interesting as the rest of the off the concept may be, the most fascinating piece of technology may be in its back seats. BMW’s Touch Command Tablet allows back-seat passengers to access the Internet and a host of multimedia, as well as the car’s navigation and communication features. The tablet will allow passengers to bark out directions to the driver by text message, taking the backseat driver into the digital age.

RM Auctions has some very special and expensive Italian sportscars of the 50s and 60s consigned for its auction in Monaco on May 10, but the one that currently carries the highest estimated value at between 4 and 5.5 million euros ($5.5 – $7.5 million) is a 1956 Maserati 450S with some very interesting provenance.

The Maserati started its life as a six-cylinder 350S that Stirling Moss drove in the 1956 Mille Miglia race. Unfortunately, the brakes failed, and it crashed into a tree and nearly into a ravine. Moss and his co-driver weren’t injured, but the car was kaputt.

Maserati repaired it and used the chassis as a test mule for its new 5.7-liter V8 racecar called the 450S. It featured an extended wheelbase to fit the larger engine and a new body with a single seat. The racer hit the track again at the hands of Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio in the 1957 Buenos Aires 1000 KM but retired with transmission issues. Later that season, it crashed again at the 1957 Mille Miglia at the hands of driver Jean Behra. After that, the car sat around the workshop until it was sold without an engine in 1965.

After kicking around several owners, the 450S received a restoration in the 80s with a correct V8 engine being installed, and it made its grand reemergence in the 1987 Mille Miglia. According to RM, it has mostly sat on display in a climate-controlled environment since then.

The 450S is a rarity, with Maserati only building 11 of them, counting the prototype. While the test car proved temperamental on the track, the other cars won at Sebring and the Swedish Grand Prix in 1957.

LONDON (April 3, 2014) – RM Auctions, the world’s largest collector car auction house for investment-quality automobiles, continues to attract incredible, historically significant cars to its forthcoming Monaco sale at Le Sporting on 10 May. Staged during the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique weekend, the single-day sale will present a superb roster of more than 80 handpicked, blue-chip automobiles, including seven vehicles with pre-sale estimates in excess of €1.000.000.

World-class Ferraris are never far from any RM sale and the upcoming Monaco event is no exception, featuring no less than 16 examples from the famed Italian marque. Amongst recent highlights is a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/C with coachwork by Scaglietti. Chassis 09067 is the ninth of only twelve produced, and is arguably the finest and most original example of its kind as it boasts fully matching numbers and Ferrari Classiche certification. Unlike many 275 GTB/Cs, 09067 was not sold to a race team but rather delivered new to a private owner in Milan who registered it for road use. The car didn’t see track action until 1969, when its third owner competed in the Colle San Eusebio Hill Climb. It then passed onto its fourth owner in 1973, spending the next 22 years in the Netherlands. Most recently, the car has participated in various tours and rallies including the Tour Auto, but its infrequent period race history makes it very unusual and undoubtedly contributes to it being one of the most original and desirable 275 GTB/Cs in existence (Estimate: €4.300.000–€5.000.000).

RM is also delighted to announce that it will offer a very rare 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Pinin Farina Cabriolet Series I, chassis 1181 GT, in Monaco. It is the 36th of only 40 examples built as well as being the final factory covered-headlamp version. Connoisseurs will appreciate that 1181 GT is built on the later and much superior 508D chassis and the fact that it is both matching numbers and fully Ferrari Classiche certified. Completed on 12 March 1959, chassis 1181 GT was shipped to New York City for display on Ferrari’s stand at the third International Automobile Show prior to being delivered to Luigi Chinetti Jr. It was then sold in 1960 to preferred Ferrari customer William McKelvy, the famed principal of the Scuderia Bear team before passing onto Bob Grossman, the well-known New York-based dealer, Briggs Cunningham team driver, and two-time SCCA champion a year later. The Cabriolet was subsequently owned by a number of well-known collectors in North America before spending the last three years residing in the UK (Estimate: €4.000.0000–€5.000.000).

Max Girardo, Managing Director of RM Auctions, Europe, says: “Once again, we are proving to be the auction house of choice when it comes to selling historically significant Ferraris. Another significant entry sure to attract collectors of the Maranello marque is the matching-numbers 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS, chassis 10719. One of ninety-nine built, it was originally shipped to Luigi Chinetti Motors in Greenwich, Connecticut in early 1968, passing through the hands of various respected collectors in North America over the following decade. In 2006 the car benefited from a thorough restoration by Rudi Koniczek & Company, which brought it up to the most remarkably perfect condition in every respect. A testament to the outstanding quality of its restoration, 10719, presented in stunning Blu Scuro with a Claret and black leather interior and black cloth top, was shown at the 2011 Concorso Italiano in Monterey, California where it was awarded the Ferrari Club of America Pacific Region Vintage Concours Award and received Best of Show honours
(Estimate: €1.500.0000–€1.800.000).

Not all rare Ferraris herald from the 1960s and the marque’s more recent design will be represented in Monaco by a 2006 Ferrari 575 GTZ with unique coachwork by Zagato. This immensely rare care is the brainchild of a Japanese collector, Yushiyuki Hayashi who commissioned Zagato to create a unique design using Ferrari’s 575 Maranello Berlinetta as a platform, taking his inspiration from the Zagato-bodied TdF models. It is surely one of the most recognisable coachbuilt creations of the early 21st century as Zagato produced only six examples, all of which carry unique body features specified by their first owners, leaving no two cars exactly alike. The 575 GTZ on offer is one of the most fascinating Ferrari cars of recent times, and presents a very rare opportunity for collectors seeking unique features and exclusivity (Estimate: €880.000–€1.050.000).

Of course, Ferrari isn’t the only Italian marque to have produced some of the world’s greatest sports and racing cars. Maserati was more than a match for the Maranello marque on both road and track during the 1950s and 1960s. Monaco will see RM offer the 1956 Maserati 450S Prototype, a truly historic racing car which lived two lives, originally as a six-cylinder Works racer, and later as the first incarnation of the eight-cylinder 450S. With beautiful yet purposeful coachwork by Fantuzzi, the example on offer competed as the Works entry at the 1956 Mille Miglia, driven by the legendary pairing of Sir Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson. After the Mille Miglia, the car returned to the factory where it became the prototype for the new eight-cylinder 450S. Once acquired by the current owner, this historic Maserati was painstakingly restored in 1987 to its prototype specification, with significant advice and detailed consultation with the Factory. The Monaco sale represents the first time the car has been offered for sale in 33 years, presenting a very exclusive ownership opportunity (Estimate: €4.000.000–€5.500.000).

It appears that BMW is ready to take another step upmarket with a new concept flagship luxury sedan at the Beijing Motor Show at the end of April. The showcar is said to preview the company’s rumored 9 Series, a sedan that would be positioned against top trims of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, like the rumored S600 Maybach.

According to Automotive News Europe, the concept sedan wears styling language adapted from the curvaceous BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe (pictured above) shown at the 2013 Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance in May. It rides on BMW’s new, modular platform – codenamed G11 – for the company’s largest cars, an architecture also expected to be shared with the next 7 Series and future Rolls-Royce vehicles. It’s rumored to bring the weight of the 7 closer to the 5 Series, which would be several hundred pounds lighter when comparing the base models of both current vehicles. We spotted the next-gen 7 Series testing over a year ago, and both it and the 9 Series are expected to go on sale in 2016.

Unfortunately, at the moment there is no official information about the concept. “We don’t have any official news yet on anything in Beijing,” Julian Arguelles, BMW USA spokesperson, tells Autoblog. However, it’s heartening to think that BMW might be adapting the gorgeous shape of the Gran Lusso for production.

the project by car designer david obendorfer is a modern interpretation of the 1968 BMW E9 series designed by giovanni michelotti. it focuses on two models: michelotti’s E9 and its predecessor, the 1965 BMW 2000 CS (E120 series). the BMW CS vintage concept is based on the 6 series platform; the style, despite numerous citations from the past, is substantially contemporaneous with updated proportions and with modern details, many of which are influenced by nautical styling solutions.

back then the 2000 CS used to be fairly successful thanks to its sleek line, brilliant performance and good build quality,’ obendorfer tells designboom. ‘BMW decided to upgrade the model by setting up a new generation of straight-six engines, redesigning the interior, and the only part of the coupè that had raised concerns: the front. the new front end, by giovanni michelotti, gave considerable impetus to the whole car body. the designer from turin eliminated the large rectangular headlights in favor of an arrow-shaped front with a large matte black mask and four round headlights.’
