Well, consider the cat officially out of the bag. Nearly five months after its debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show touting “at least 625 horsepower,” the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has now been SAE-certified to produce an impressive 650 hp.

For reference, the new Z06 is bested only by the following bits of exotica: the Ferrari LaFerrari, the McLaren P1, the Porsche 918 Spyder, the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, the Lamborghini Aventador and the Ferrari FF. That’s some mighty good company.

Complementing the 650 supercharged ponies is an equally impressive 650 pound-feet of torque. Lovely as that second figure is, we really need to break down where the power is available. According to Chevy, 457 pound-feet of torque is available at idle, while 96 percent of peak torque arrives by 2,800 rpm. Honestly, if the Z06 can’t hit 60 in under three seconds, we’ll be shocked. Talk about a whole lot to handle.

DETROIT – The all-new 2015 Corvette Z06 is the most powerful production car ever from General Motors and one of a few production cars available in the United States that delivers more than 600 horsepower.

The Z06’s LT4 supercharged 6.2L V-8 engine is SAE-certified at 650 horsepower (485 kW) at 6,400 rpm and 650 lb-ft of torque (881 Nm) at 3,600 rpm.

“The LT4 Small Block sets a new benchmark for power and torque at GM,” said Steve Kiefer, vice president, GM Powertrain Engineering. “The engine also puts the new Corvette Z06 on par with the most powerful supercars offered in America, while delivering performance with impeccable manners that make it suitable for daily driving.”

Compared with other supercar engines, the LT4 is a veritable fountain of low-end torque, producing 457 lb-ft (619 Nm) just off idle and 625 lb-ft (847 Nm) by only 2,800 rpm. The V-12-powered Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, for example, produces about 28 percent less torque than the Z06, despite offering about 12 percent more horsepower – and its peak torque isn’t achieved until 6,000 rpm. The LT4 maintains 90 percent of its peak torque, or 592 lb-ft (802 Nm), from 2,500 to 5,400 rpm.

The new LT4 engine eclipses the Porsche 911 Turbo S engine’s peak power levels by 90 horsepower (67 kW) and 134 lb-ft of torque (182 Nm).

“Torque is the pulling power of an engine and the LT4’s abundance of it at every rpm in the engine’s speed range helps the 2015 Corvette Z06 accelerate quicker and respond nearly instantaneously,” said Jordan Lee, chief engineer for Small Block engines. “It’s the very definition of power on demand.”

The new Z06 engine produces 40 percent more peak torque (180 lb-ft / 244 Nm) than the previous-generation’s 7.0L LS7 engine – and 7.5 percent more than the supercharged 2013 Corvette ZR1’s 604 lb-ft (819 Nm). At 3,200 rpm, the new LT4 surpasses the LS7 by 208 lb-ft of torque (252 Nm). On the horsepower side of the graph, the LT4’s 650-hp rating is 29 percent greater than the LS7’s 505 horsepower (376 kW), and 12 horses more than the ZR1’s LS9 engine.

“The new LT4 engine builds on the design strengths of our previous supercharged engine and leverages the technologies introduced on the Corvette Stingray – direct injection, cylinder deactivation and continuously variable valve timing – to take Corvette performance to an all-new plateau,” said Lee. “Our new, very compact supercharger also helps the engine make power more quickly, and perhaps more importantly, it helps produce more torque earlier in the rpm band.”

“It’s also worth mentioning that the LT4’s supercar performance numbers are achieved with an engine that is nearly the same size as the very compact LT1 engine introduced in the 2014 Corvette Stingray,” Lee said. “The power density of the LT4 makes it one of the smallest and lightest 650-hp engines in the industry.”

LT4 details
The new LT4 engine is based on the same Gen 5 small block foundation as the Corvette Stingray’s LT1 6.2L naturally aspirated engine, incorporating several unique features designed to support its higher output and the greater cylinder pressures created by forced induction, including:
• Rotocast A356T6 aluminum cylinder heads that are stronger and handle heat better than conventional aluminum heads
• Lightweight titanium intake valves
• Machined, forged powder metal steel connecting rods for reduced reciprocating mass
• High 10.0:1 compression ratio – for a forced-induction engine – enhances performance and efficiency and is enabled by direct injection
• Forged aluminum pistons with unique, stronger structure to ensure strength under high cylinder pressures
• Stainless steel exhaust manifolds and an aluminum balancer that are lighter than their LT1 counterparts
• Standard dry-sump oiling system with a dual-pressure-control oil pump.

A new 1.7L supercharger spins at up to 20,000 rpm – 5,000 rpm more than the supercharger on the Corvette ZR1’s engine. The rotors are smaller in diameter, which contributes to their higher-rpm capability – and enables them to produce power-enhancing boost earlier in the rpm band. That boost is achieved more efficiently via a more direct discharge port that creates less turbulence, reducing heat and speeding airflow into the engine.

“The Small Block’s cam-in-block design heritage has always enabled very high performance and responsiveness in a small, compact package – an attribute amplified by the performance of our new supercharger’s design,” said Lee.

The LT4 is assembled at the new Performance Build Center at GM’s Bowling Green Assembly Plant and at GM’s Tonawanda engine plant in New York. It is matched with a standard seven-speed manual transmission or an all-new, paddle-shift eight-speed automatic transmission built in Toledo, Ohio.

Designed to deliver shift responses on par with the world’s best dual-clutch transmissions, it is the first automatic offered in a Z06. It also makes the Z06 one of the few cars this powerful to offer the choice of a conventional manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic.

The 2015 Corvette Z06 goes on sale in early 2015.

U.S. light-vehicle sales — led by big gains at Nissan, Toyota, Chrysler and General Motors — rose 11 percent to 1.6 million in May as a raft of discounts and extended holiday deals drew consumers to showrooms.

The annualized pace of sales shot up to 16.8 million. That’s the highest rate for the seasonally adjusted rate since July 2006 and marked the third consecutive month the SAAR has topped 16 million after a weaker-than-expected start to the year.

“Industry sales in May soared as consumer confidence improved and demand for new vehicles continued to strengthen,” said Bill Fay, Toyota division group vice president and general manager. “May was just one of those months where everything came together with five weekends, an early Memorial Day and an extra selling day.”

The SAAR had been forecast to come in at 16.1 million, according to analysts’ estimates. In May 2013, the figure was 15.5 million.

GM’s U.S. sales rose 13 percent last month despite an escalating recall crisis that has dogged the company since February.

All four of GM’s brands increased sales as the automaker posted its biggest monthly gain of the year. Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, and Chrysler Group also tallied their biggest gains of 2014 with double-digit increases. Hyundai Motor America advanced 4 percent and Ford Motor Co. was up 3 percent.

GM’s increase was double what had been projected by analysts. After a sluggish start, the automaker’s sales are now up 2.8 percent for the year.

“There’s some risk associated with the recalls, but it hasn’t been evident in GM’s sales numbers so far,” Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of forecasting for researcher LMC Automotive, said before today’s results were released. “The jury is still out, but at this stage, it’s not derailing their momentum.”

Chevrolet led GM with a 14 percent gain, followed by Buick at 11 percent. GMC was up 8 percent, while Cadillac advanced 6 percent.

GM said its retail sales advanced 10 percent while fleet shipments rose 21 percent last month.

Consumer confidence

Nissan Motor Corp. reported a 19 percent rise in May sales — its second straight month of double-digit gains. The Nissan brand set a May record of 125,558 units sold, up 18 percent, and Infiniti volume advanced 31 percent to 10,376.

The Altima, Sentra, Rogue, Versa and Juke — all core models — each set May U.S. sales records. Overall, the Nissan brand has now set sales records in 14 of the last 15 months.

“Car sales are heating up as we head into summer,” Fred Diaz, Nissan’s senior vice president for sales, marketing and operations, said in a statement.

Toyota Motor Corp. sales jumped 17 percent to 243,236 units. Volume rose 12 percent at the Toyota division behind Camry, Corolla, and Prius demand, while Lexus deliveries advanced 17 percent.

Ford said its retail sales climbed 6 percent last month. Demand at the Ford division edged up 2 percent and Lincoln volume jumped 21 percent.

Three core models — the Accord, Civic and CR-V — helped Honda Motor Co. to a nine percent increase in May sales. Deliveries rose 10 percent at the Honda division and 2 percent at Acura. Honda officials, noting the launch of the all-new Fit this month, said the brand remains well-positioned heading into the second half of the year.

“Our dealers are preparing for heavy customer traffic in the coming months,” said Jeff Conrad, Honda division senior vice president and general manager.

Chrysler streak

At Chrysler, strong Jeep and Ram pickup demand helped propel the company to its 50th consecutive monthly advance.

Jeep sales, behind the new Cherokee and redesigned Grand Cherokee, surged 58 percent and Ram pickup deliveries climbed 17 percent.

Jeep sales have now jumped 30 percent or more for seven straight months. May also marked the first month ever that Jeep’s U.S. volume has topped the 70,000 mark, Chrysler said.

Sales rose 18 percent at the Fiat brand and 3 percent at Dodge, while volume slid 22 percent at the Chrysler brand.

Overall, Chrysler Group’s light-truck sales rose 38 percent while car deliveries dropped 27 percent.

“Our dealers reported brisk May sales over five weekends and the Memorial Day holiday,” Reid Bigland, head of U.S. sales operations for Chrysler Group, said in a statement.

Hyundai Motor America set an all-time monthly sales record in May of 70,907 units, up 4 percent over May 2013. The company cited gains of 20 percent or more in sales of the Tucson, Santa Fe, Genesis and Equus.

Kia Motors America set a monthly sales record of 60,087 units, a 15 percent increase over May 2013. Last month also marked the first time Kia has generated more than 60,000 monthly U.S. sales.

May sales rose 17 percent to 5,840 at Jaguar Land Rover North America. Land Rover sales reached an all-time May high of 4,536 units, up 28 percent, while Jaguar deliveries slipped 9 percent.

VW slump

Volkswagen Group said sales at the VW brand slumped 15 percent, stretching its skid to 14 months.

Audi, aided by the redesigned A3, said deliveries rose 26 percent to 16,601 vehicles, which is the brand’s second-best month ever and its 41st consecutive month of record sales.

The U.S. launch last month of the Macan crossover helped Porsche set an all-time monthly sales record of 4,609.

Sales at Mitsubishi Motors Corp., driven by the Outlander Sport and revamped Mirage, rose 54 percent. It was the third consecutive month the company’s deliveries surged by 47 percent or more.

“We are enthused that new-car shoppers are taking notice of our brand, and we are not going to let up in June,” said Don Swearingen, executive vice president for Mitsubishi Motors North America.

U.S. light-vehicle sales for the month were projected to rise 6.5 percent to 1.54 million, based on a survey of analysts by Bloomberg. But that estimate proved too conservative.

 

5 weekends of sales

May deliveries were aided by five weekends of sales and generous Memorial Day deals that were extended through Monday, June 2, the cutoff point for last month’s sales count.

TrueCar estimated the average incentive per new unit sold last month rose 1 percent to $2,677 from May 2013, and jumped 3.5 percent from April. Hyundai-Kia, Honda and Volkswagen Group posted the biggest gains in deals over May 2013, while incentives dropped at Chrysler and Nissan, TrueCar said.

Mazda was another automaker that reaped dividends from strong holiday shopping: sales rose 23 percent to 29,731 vehicles.

“Despite the economy being anyone’s guess these days, with GDP down and durable goods orders off, we see consumer confidence looking strong and shoppers turning into buyers, and the proof of this is the results we saw across the industry,” said Ron Stettner, vice president of sales for Mazda North America. “Memorial Day was huge for us, and we feared a slowdown toward the end of the month that never happened.”

Michael Foote, a general manager at Lia Auto Group in Albany, N.Y., said sales and traffic were “very heavy” last month.

The group sells Toyota, Scion, Kia, Honda, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Infiniti, Nissan, Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and Ram.

“We use database mining through a software program to contact customers to put them into a new or newer car for close to the same monthly payment. It’s worked well for us, has helped our sales immensely,” Foote said. “Honda had a fantastic program on their core products [the Accord, CRV and Civic], strong lease programs and finance programs.

“Business is fabulous,” Foote added. “We had a long winter, so it’s well deserved.”

GM, Ford top forecasts

Sales at GM had been forecast to rise 6.4 percent by analysts surveyed by Bloomberg, despite a raft of recalls this year, including 2.59 million small cars for a faulty ignition switch linked to 13 deaths.

Analysts said U. S. buyers see the spate of flaws as a legacy of the company’s past rather than a defining condition of GM today.

“Shopper consideration for every GM brand has remained consistent through the recall headlines,” Edmunds.com senior analyst Jessica Caldwell said. “Many people may not realize that GM is the parent company of these brands, but others may be overlooking the trouble with older models and simply seeking shiny new sheet metal that serves their needs.”

Ford, facing a comparison to a strong May last year, managed its 3 percent increase against an analyst forecast of a slight decline.

U.S. auto sales topped 16 million a year from 1999 to 2007 — peaking at 17.4 million in 2000 — and remain on track to reach that level again in 2014, analysts say.

At Machens Chrysler Doge Jeep Ram in Columbia, Mo., Sales Manager Mark Winstead said the dealership spent a lot of money on advertising in May and was counting on robust sales to offset that spending.

“Jeep is always a hot product; people want SUVs,” Winstead said late last week ahead of today’s sales report, adding Ram pickups with a diesel engine were also popular sellers last month.

Back in 2011 the first details were giving on a French startup by the name of Genty, which was working on a new supercar called the Akylone that would have the performance to match the latest crop of hypercars like the McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari. Not much has been heard from Genty since then but now the company has revealed a slightly updated design for its Akylone supercar and even more potent performance figures.

In designing the Akylone, the goal for Genty was to come up with a high-performance vehicle that returns to the principle of pure driving pleasure by offering a a class leading power-to-weight ratio. In other words, power needed to be up and weight down.

In the power department, Genty, unlike many other supercar startups, has chosen to develop its own bespoke V-8. In its latest specification, the new unit is to be a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-8 developing upwards of 1,200 horsepower and 861 pound-feet of torque. All of this is to be routed to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential gearbox with paddle shifters.

In order to keep weight of the Akylone as low as possible but still maintain its strength and rigidity, the chassis is to be a mix of carbon fiber and aluminum, which should result in an overall curb weight of 2,429 pounds (dry) and a front-to-rear weight distribution ratio of 42:58.

Initial performance estimates include a 0-62 mph time of 2.7 seconds, a 0-124 mph time of 7.2 seconds and a 0-186 mph time of just 14 seconds. The latter would make the Akylone quicker than most supercars currently on the market—by a significant margin—which certainly raises some doubts about Genty’s credibility. However, the company does have some top-level partners involved in the development of the Akylone. These include the likes of Michelin and Öhlins.

To put that in perspective, a McLaren P1 will do 0 to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds, 0 to 124 mph in 6.8 seconds, and 0 to 186 mph in 16.5 seconds.  

At present, Genty is still trying to raise necessary funding to get the Akylone from the design to the prototype stage so real-world testing can get underway. Below is a video featuring Genty founder Frédéric Genty speaking about his company’s future plans.

Slovenian supercar startup Tushek used the recent 2014 Top Marques Monaco event to debut a new model called the T600. Tushek’s first model, the Renovatio T500, was revealed to the world at the same event back in 2012 and since then the company has confirmed that work has started on a second model to be called the Forego T700. As far as we know the T700 is still being worked on but in the meantime another new Tushek supercar has made its debut: the T600.

Tushek’s cars are renowned for their lightweight construction. The T500, for example, weighed less than 2,500 pounds yet was powered by a V-8 engine. The new T600 also sports a V-8, one cranking out 620 horsepower, and since the car weighs only 2,470 pounds it has a stunning power to weight ratio of one horse for only four pounds of weight.

The T600 is an update of the previous T500 but features enough new components to warrant it a standalone model. The chassis is a mix of carbon and titanium, and there is enough grip to support up to 1.8 g of lateral acceleration.

Tushek should release more details on its T600 at a later date. Like all of its cars, the T600 will be built by hand and can be individually tailored to meet the desires of its buyer.

Washington — General Motors Co. said Wednesday it is recalling another 218,000 vehicles in two new campaigns for faulty components in daytime running lights that could cause a fire.

With the new recalls, GM has recalled nearly 13.8 million vehicles in the United States in 29 campaigns —a yearly record for GM — and more than 15.7 million vehicles worldwide. GM has announced 10 new recalls and expanded another campaign since Thursday as the automaker works to put any outstanding safety issues behind it. By contrast, GM recalled 757,000 vehicles in all of 2013.

GM said it is recalling 218,000 2004-08 Chevrolet Aveo small cars equipped with daytime running lights. GM said there may be heat generated within the running lights module located in the center console in the instrument panel, which could melt the module and lead to a fire.

GM is also issuing a second recall for the 2004-08 Chevrolet Optra, covering about 200 vehicles. GM said heat from the headlamp switch or daytime running lamp module, which are both located on or near the left side of the steering column, could melt the headlamp switch or running light module and cause a fire.?

GM told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration it doesn’t yet have a fix. GM didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on whether any fires have been reported.

The automaker on Friday agreed to pay a record-setting $35 million fine for failing to recall 2.6 million vehicles for ignition switch defects linked to 13 deaths and 32 crashes in a timely fashion. GM also agreed to a three-year consent order and will hold monthly meetings with NHTSA to go over all possible safety issues that the automaker is considering launching a recall.

GM also faces investigations from the Justice Department, Securities and Exchange Commission and at least one state attorney general. Congress plans to hold a new round of hearings and the automaker is expected to release findings from its internal investigation in early June. The automaker has also retained a victims compensation expert, Ken Feinberg, to assess whether it should make payments for crashes that took place before its bankruptcy restructuring in 2009.

The company has taken $1.7 billion in charges to account for the costs of recalls.

Citi analyst Itay Michaeli lowered his earnings forecast for GM for the year from $3.03 per share to $2.88 on the latest recalls. He said analysts had hoped “GM had ‘cleaned house’ on recalls” in the first quarter, “but this latest escalation clearly says otherwise.”

He said in a research note that the “risk of more recalls persists and is tough to quantify…. The headline risks from these recalls is something we’ll continue monitoring with frequent sales and pricing checks.”

Through the end of April, it doesn’t appear that GM’s recalls have hurt the automaker’s sales.

The snow, ice and extreme chill may be gone, but automakers still are feeling the aftereffects of the harsh winter: For months, big delays in the nation’s rail network have forced them to park newly built cars and trucks in guarded lots or to hire truck carriers to get them to dealers.

The delays began several months ago and likely won’t be erased until the Fourth of July, according to one transportation analyst. As a result, some models are in short supply and dealers and customers are having trouble getting them as quickly as they’d like.

The sales hit is hurting profits for some carmakers, as they are unable to sell as many vehicles. And the rail issue has temporarily boosted transportation costs for some car companies — which typically heavily rely on rail — to move new vehicles.

“There is a sizable backlog of shippable vehicles,” Richard Kiley, who heads automotive business at Norfolk Southern Railroad in Norfolk, Va., and chairs the Multilevel Pooling Executive Committee, a rail industry group that helps manage the North America pool of auto carrier rail cars, said in an email.

Kiley said about 180,000 new vehicles are waiting to be loaded by rail across North America; the typical figure is about 69,000 and also is higher than last year’s 120,000 vehicles in March 2013.

Companies, including automakers, tend to run into rail-car delays in the spring, but this year’s colder and longer-than-normal winter caused havoc for automakers’ logistics departments. Kiley said cold weather tends to lead to railroads operating slower than normal, as the weather requires more inspections; people working outdoors aren’t as efficient as normal; and machinery tends to fail more often. This increased the time to move product and cut fleet capacity, Kiley said.

Trains had to lighten loads to safely carry the vehicles; that’s because trains’ air braking systems get more difficult in cold weather. The extreme weather shortened how far conductors and engineers could get the trains on a shift. That meant fewer rail cars were available to ship goods across all industries.

Toyota Motor Corp. said rail delays have made it difficult to get vehicles such as the popular RAV4 and Highlander to dealerships. For example, earlier this month Toyota had about 1,000 Lexus RX SUVs ready to be sent “that have been held up by the rail car shortage,” said Jeff Bracken, Lexus Group vice president and general manager, in a call with reporters this month.

In Flint, rows and rows of 2015 heavy-duty Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierra pickups are parked off-site in a guarded lot near the Flint Truck Assembly Plant until they can be shipped by rail. The bad winter also hurt deliveries of GM’s full-size SUVs introduced in the first quarter. The company in some cases opted to truck vehicles over the road instead of by rail.

GM spokesman Tom Henderson said in a statement, “This winter’s severe weather has severely strained the North American rail network. As a result, many industries including the auto sector, are coping with slowing throughput which is resulting in rising inventories of products at plant and rail yards across the U.S. and Canada.”

He said GM anticipates working through the backlog of vehicles by late May or early June.

Honda North America confirmed it has experienced shipping delays. “We are working with our rail partners to overcome these challenges and have expanded our car-hauling footprint around our plants and ports,” Marcos Frommer, manager of corporate affairs and communications at Honda North America, said in an email.

Ford Motor Co. said shipments of some vehicles, including the F-150 pickup and compact Focus, were delayed because of weather-related rail backups. Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks said last month the backups weren’t likely to hurt the company in the long run.

“I think that will clean up and it won’t be an issue going forward,” he said.

An industry report from PHH Arval, a global fleet management firm, says rail-car shortages are typical in the spring, but they started earlier this year. The report dated March 10 noted a rail car shortage of 2,500 cars compared to 1,000 at the same time in 2013.

The report said shipments were slowed from Chrysler Group LLC’s Saltillo Truck Assembly Plant (Ram trucks) and the Chrysler Toluca Assembly Plant (Dodge Journey and Fiat 500). Chrysler said rail deliveries had some of the biggest delays in recent memory. It didn’t help that one of the company’s newest and most popular vehicles — the Jeep Cherokee — was already in short supply.

In addition to relying more on trucks, automakers have begun using different shipping yards to put vehicles on trains — first sending them on car haulers or shipping vehicles by sea from Mexico to the U.S.

Charles Clowdis, managing director of global trade and transportation for IHS, a global information company, said he expects it will be early July before the industry is completely recovered. The problem has included “cars being in the wrong place, shortages of locomotives, shortages of crews to move those locomotives,” he said.

Kiley said railroads have been able to cut into the number of vehicles awaiting shipment by about 10,000 in the past two to three weeks.

Clowdis said other factors also contributed to the delays, including a focus by some railroads late last year on moving more crude oil by trains. Some railroad companies now are hiring more conductors and engineers and are working to refurbish locomotives and rail cars that were parked during the recession, Clowdis said.

“They have come out of it by in large pretty well now, but it was severe when it was happening,” he said of the delays

NEW YORK (Bloomberg) — Windshield washer fluid may be a breeding ground for bacteria that causes the deadly pneumonia known as Legionnaires’ disease.

Previous studies have tied riding in automobiles to the illness, though researchers didn’t know how or why it happened. An investigation into fluid dispersed by school buses in Arizona seems to have provided the answer, according to research released Sunday by the American Society for Microbiology at its meeting in Boston.

Three-quarters of the buses tested in one district in Arizona were positive for the bacteria, the study found. When the contaminated fluid was sprayed, the researchers detected levels of the bacteria that spread within a range that could be contracted and cause outbreaks of Legionnaires’ disease.

“Washer fluid has the traits a potentially dangerous source of Legionella exposure needs,” Otto Schwake, a microbiology Ph.D. student at Arizona State University in Tempe and the study’s lead author, said in an e-mail. “It is aerosolized, heated and people are regularly exposed to it. The results from this study support previously demonstrated epidemiological evidence for a link between automobiles and Legionnaires’ disease by providing microbiological data on survival, presence and transmission of Legionella in washer fluid.”

The study is the first to find the bacteria Legionella in an automobile’s washer fluid and aerosolized in the spray, Schwake said.

Hot tubs

The Legionella bacteria are found naturally in the environment, most commonly in water. They are associated with hot tubs and cooling towers found in large-scale air conditioners and are transmitted through a mist or vapor, not person to person.

The airborne bacteria are contracted by inhaling small drops of contaminated water. Cases often involve air conditioning and heating systems in buildings or public showers. The disease was named after an outbreak at a meeting of the American Legion in Philadelphia in 1976.

Most of the people exposed don’t become sick, the authors said. Those most at risk include the elderly, smokers and those with weakened immune systems, Schwake said.

The researchers in the study first measured Legionella survival by growing samples of the bacteria in washer fluid in the lab. They then examined Legionella in washer fluid collected from school buses in central Arizona.

They found that the amount of Legionella in the washer fluid was higher in the summer than winter months.

Calculating risk

Researchers are working on a model to calculate the risk of Legionnaires’ disease from windshield washer spray. Schwake said more data is needed before any safety precautions can be given.

“We are exposed to an enormous number and variety of microbes every day from countless sources, the overwhelmingly vast majority of which are harmless,” he said. “That being said, unknown sources of pathogen transmission certainly exist and need to be studied. Due to the sheer lack of data, I believe any study examining the relationship between Legionella and automobiles would be greatly useful.”

Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia — lung inflammation usually caused by infection. Legionnaires’ disease is caused by a bacterium known as legionella.

You can’t catch Legionnaires’ disease from person-to-person contact. Instead, most people get Legionnaires’ disease from inhaling the bacteria. Older adults, smokers and people with weakened immune systems are particularly susceptible to Legionnaires’ disease.

The legionella bacterium also causes Pontiac fever, a milder illness resembling the flu. Separately or together, the two illnesses are sometimes called legionellosis. Pontiac fever usually clears on its own, but untreated Legionnaires’ disease can be fatal. Although prompt treatment with antibiotics usually cures Legionnaires’ disease, some people continue to experience problems after treatment.

Symptoms

Legionnaires’ disease usually develops two to 10 days after exposure to legionella bacteria. It frequently begins with the following signs and symptoms:

  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Chills
  • Fever that may be 104 F (40 C) or higher

By the second or third day, you’ll develop other signs and symptoms that may include:

  • Cough, which may bring up mucus and sometimes blood
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
  • Confusion or other mental changes

Although Legionnaires’ disease primarily affects the lungs, it occasionally can cause infections in wounds and in other parts of the body, including the heart.

A mild form of Legionnaires’ disease — known as Pontiac fever — may produce signs and symptoms including fever, chills, headache and muscle aches. Pontiac fever doesn’t infect your lungs, and symptoms usually clear within two to five days.

When to see a doctor

See your doctor if you think you’ve been exposed to legionella bacteria. Diagnosing and treating Legionnaires’ disease as soon as possible can help shorten the recovery period and prevent serious complications. For people at high risk, prompt treatment is critical.

 

The bacterium Legionella pneumophila is responsible for most cases of Legionnaires’ disease. Outdoors, legionella bacteria survive in soil and water, but rarely cause infections. Indoors, though, legionella bacteria can multiply in all kinds of water systems — hot tubs, air conditioners and mist sprayers in grocery store produce departments.

Although it’s possible to contract Legionnaires’ disease from home plumbing systems, most outbreaks have occurred in large buildings, perhaps because complex systems allow the bacteria to grow and spread more easily.

How the infection spreads

Most people become infected when they inhale microscopic water droplets containing legionella bacteria. This might be the spray from a shower, faucet or whirlpool, or water dispersed through the ventilation system in a large building. Outbreaks have been linked to a range of sources, including:

  • Hot tubs and whirlpools on cruise ships
  • Cooling towers in air conditioning systems
  • Decorative fountains
  • Swimming pools
  • Physical therapy equipment
  • Water systems in hotels, hospitals and nursing homes

Although legionella bacteria primarily spread through aerosolized water droplets, the infection can be transmitted in other ways, including:

  • Aspiration. This occurs when liquids accidentally enter your lungs, usually because you cough or choke while drinking. If you aspirate water containing legionella bacteria, you may develop Legionnaires’ disease.
  • Soil. A few people have contracted Legionnaires’ disease after working in the garden or using contaminated potting soil.

Risk factors

Not everyone exposed to legionella bacteria becomes sick. You’re more likely to develop the infection if you:

  • Smoke. Smoking damages the lungs, making you more susceptible to all types of lung infections.
  • Have a weakened immune system as a result of HIV/AIDS or certain medications, especially corticosteroids and drugs taken to prevent organ rejection after a transplant.
  • Have a chronic lung disease such as emphysema or another serious condition such as diabetes, kidney disease or cancer.
  • Are 50 years of age or older.

Legionnaires’ disease is a sporadic and local problem in hospitals and nursing homes, where germs may spread easily and people are vulnerable to infection.

  • Respiratory failure. This occurs when the lungs are no longer able to provide the body with enough oxygen or can’t remove enough carbon dioxide from the blood.
  • Septic shock. This occurs when a severe, sudden drop in blood pressure reduces blood flow to vital organs, especially to the kidneys and brain. The heart tries to compensate by increasing the volume of blood pumped, but the extra workload eventually weakens the heart and reduces blood flow even further.
  • Acute kidney failure. This is the sudden loss of your kidneys’ ability to perform their main function — filtering waste material from your blood. When your kidneys fail, dangerous levels of fluid and waste accumulate in your body.

Preparing for your appointment

  • Write down questions to ask your doctor.

  • What is likely causing my symptoms?
  • What are other possible causes?
  • What tests do I need?
  • What is the best course of action?
  • What are the alternatives to the approach you’re suggesting?
  • I have other health conditions. How will this illness affect them?
  • Is it possible to avoid hospitalization? If not, how many days will I be hospitalized?

Don’t hesitate to ask any other questions you have.

What to expect from your doctor

Your doctor is likely to ask you a number of questions, including:

  • When did you begin experiencing symptoms?
  • Have your symptoms been continuous?
  • Have your symptoms been worsening since their onset?
  • What, if anything, seems to improve your symptoms?
  • What, if anything, appears to worsen your symptoms?
What you can do in the meantime

To keep from making your condition worse, follow these tips:

  • Don’t smoke or be around smoke.
  • Don’t drink alcohol.
  • Stay out of work or school, and rest as much as you can.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.

If you get sicker before you see a doctor, go to an emergency room.
